Description

This upgrade completely replaces your mic’s capsule, and electronics for a major boost in tone and performance.  Your mic is rebuilt as a Transformer-Coupled mic.  Optional internal pattern switch allows switching to an OMNI polar pattern when you need it.

At its core is our custom BFM circuit, inspired by the KM84 and adapted for LDCs. Most mics support either k47 or CK12 style capsules.

Choose your transformer to shape the sound.

  • Cinemag 5722 – Clean, balanced, and great on anything.

  • AMI T12 – Adds low-end body and warmth.

  • 3U GZT-84 – Budget-friendly with a smooth tone.

  • Neutrik – Lo-fi and gritty with a natural high-pass feel.

Capsule Choices:

  • k47-style Center-Terminated – Neumann-ish mid-forward tone
  • CK12-style Edge-Terminated – Extended, silky top end

Yes, I could have just purchased a higher quality mic. I already have several in my locker now, my goal was to take one of my first inexpensive mics that I had ever purchased and see what the outcome may be. If you’re at all considering doing the same, do it! Hey it’s no $10k mic now but the performance far exceeds my $600-$1k mics that I currently own. I have been using it for recording a female vocalist currently with amazing results. Very satisfied with the mod, and I highly recommend the upgrade. Thanks Rockscience.

I had two Sterling mics upgraded and they are a huge upgrade from the original product. I highly recommend anyone getting an upgrade from Rockscience.

I had an mxl 550 modified and what a difference from the original factory version more open , more clarity, its like taking a blanket off the speakers when comparing the factory to the modified version . If you have some low end sounding mics and want them to sound much better reach out to Bob at Rockscience he is great to work with and can hook you up.
    Thanks

AKG C414, Rockscience 990: they sound so similar.
990 before vs after? Night and day difference. I recorded a before and after comparison and the the response was much more even and flat compared to before with a much better low frequency response. This mic was recording down past 20hz at flat response levels. It responds how one would want a high end mic to respond.
Sounds great, feels great, looks great, absolute STEAL of a microphone for the price point. I’d do it again in a heart beat

I really was just trying to make my mic usable. I was not expecting it to be the go-to that it has become. Thank you so much! I knew there was some reason that I plunked down good money on those “Labor Day Specials” so many years ago.

I didn’t get into music production so I could sound like everybody else, and that attitude has influenced how I have populated my mic cabinet. I could walk into any well stocked retail music store and grab all the mics everyone else has….but what fun is THAT? I’d much rather have Bob build or mod something for me. While I kind of know what I’m getting — because one can pick what capsule you want, and couple it with your choice of transformer, or go TL — it’s still going to be unique, because they’re all hand built by one guy! Do they stand up to familiarly named studio mics costing thousands of dollars? Hell yeah they do…I mean, it’s all in your hands and how you choose to apply them, isn’t it? Right now I’m looking at an MXL 2001 that Bob modded with a C12 capsule and an AMI Tab-Funkenwerk transformer that I’ve so far used on two different album projects, and thinking I need another one just like it. As long as Rockscience keeps modding mics, I’ll keep outfitting my studio with them!

High quality materials + good workmanship = high quality performance. It’s that simple. I love the concept of transforming these plebeian tools into something wonderful, and Bob has excellent taste. This MXL 2001 now has a C12 capsule and an AMI transformer and has become my current favorite for recording difficult-to-capture acoustic guitars, like rosewood backed D-28’s. It gives a nice sheen to husky voices. Who wants to sound like everyone else? Customizing mics to your specs for your studio is the best way to have your own vibe. I’m excited about our next collaboration!

Bob was great to work with right from the start! He walked me through step by step and showed me photos of the process. Most of all, the mic sounds truly amazing and now in full rotation in my studio!!! Don’t hesitate if you are thinking of doing a mic mod…Bob D does awesome work!

  9. Tyler Farmer (verified owner)

I went with the AMI Tab-Funkenwerk T12 transformer and the CK12-Style Edge-Terminated capsule in my 990 and what a huge difference it made! I did some before and after recordings and really liked the results. I can confidently say this is the best mic that I own and would highly recommend.
